Description
Issued 4 September 1918 (some earlier printings from April 1918) by Rostov-on-Don Office of the State Bank under Don Cossack Government / White forces (anti-Bolshevik, later associated with Denikin/Armed Forces of South Russia). Printed via lithography on paper (some from Panchenko Mill). Size approx. 170–180 × 90–100 mm (varies by variant). Main colors: beige/dark green.
- Obverse: Highly ornate frame with double-headed eagle at top, central portrait of Count Matvei Ivanovich Platov (famous Don Cossack hetman/general from Napoleonic Wars), two seated allegorical women (left/right), denomination “ДВѢСТИ ПЯТЬДЕСЯТЪ РУБЛЕЙ” (250 Rubles), year “1918” in oval, signatures (variants exist).
- Reverse: Ornate patterns, large “250” denominations, legal text/promise payable by Rostov-on-Don State Bank Branch.
- Features: Running serial numbers (e.g., series like АХ- or similar); some variants with watermark (others none); no security thread; secret marks (e.g., small ovals in border) on certain issues to distinguish Bolshevik vs. Cossack printings. Demonetized 1920; not legal tender – key collectible from Russian Civil War era (White Army / Don Republic period in Rostov-on-Don, amid hyperinflation and regional chaos).
