Description

Issued December 2, 1922 (Weimar Republic era) by Reichsbank in Berlin; part of early hyperinflation series (1920–1924). Printed on paper with varying watermarks (e.g., wavy lines, G/D in stars). Size approx. 150–160 × 90–100 mm. Main colors: brown/green/light brown.

  • Obverse: Portrait of merchant Imhof (Jakob Fugger-inspired, by Albrecht Dürer) at right, Reichsadler eagles top/bottom, denomination “Fünftausend Mark” / “5000”, ornate underprint with hexagons or lattices, “Reichsbanknote”, signatures from Reichsbankdirektorium.
  • Reverse: Large “5000” in center, geometric/ornate patterns, promise text “Die Reichsbankhauptkasse in Berlin zahlt dem Inhaber dieser Note fünftausend Mark” (The Reichsbank Main Office in Berlin will pay the bearer five thousand marks).
  • Features: Running serial numbers; various watermarks (affect rarity); no security thread. Withdrawn; not legal tender – emblematic of Weimar hyperinflation onset.
