Description
This is an original cashier’s check (or bank draft) issued by the Merchants National Bank of Burlington, Vermont (National Bank charter #1197), dated January 12, 1900. It is drawn for $27.50 (written as “Twenty seven 50/100 Dollars”) and made payable to the order of W. G. Van Keuren (or a similar interpretation of the handwritten payee name). The check is routed through The Fourth National Bank in New York for clearing. Printed by the American Bank Note Co., New York, it features elaborate security engraving typical of the era, including intricate borders, Gothic-style bank name lettering, and a prominent central vignette of a bald eagle soaring with outstretched wings, grasping olive branches and arrows, accompanied by banners reading variations of “E Pluribus Unum.” Additional patriotic elements and denomination highlights appear in blue and black ink. It includes the cashier’s signature at lower right and was likely used for a routine business or personal payment at the turn of the century. This piece is classic late-19th/early-20th-century American banking ephemera, not a national currency note but a high-quality engraved draft. Condition appears excellent based on the visible details, with no major folds, tears, or heavy wear noted.
