Description
This is an original State Credit Note of the Russian Empire for 25 rubles (Pick #12a/b, 1909 issue). The obverse shows pink/red underprint with black intricate engraving: imperial crown, double-headed eagle emblem in laurel wreath, ribbons, and detailed redemption text stating exchange for gold coin (unlimited from 3 rubles, with gold content per imperial). The reverse displays a striking portrait of Emperor Alexander III (reigned 1881–1894) at right in an elaborate oval frame adorned with scrolls, foliage, crown, and military elements; below, a symbolic harvest of fruits/vegetables with banner “АЛЕКСАНДРЪ III”. Watermarks include Alexander III’s portrait and “25” patterns. Signatures vary (e.g., Konshin/Shipov as manager, various cashiers). This mid-value note exemplifies late Tsarist design—combining security features, imperial symbolism, and tribute to Alexander III (known for Russification policies). Issued in large quantities, it circulated through WWI and early Soviet years before demonetization. Highly collectible for portrait quality, historical ties, and affordability compared to larger denominations.
