Description
This is an original 1922 banknote for 5 chervontsev issued by the State Bank of the RSFSR (transitioning to USSR), cataloged as Pick #197 (or close variant in standard references like Standard Catalog of World Paper Money). Measuring about 177 × 110 mm, the obverse features green underprint with elaborate wavy/guilloche security patterns, the Soviet emblem (hammer & sickle under star in wreath), cursive issuing text, and a prominent right-side oval portrait of Vladimir Lenin. The denomination “5” appears multiple times, with backing guarantee text noting security by gold, precious metals, and state assets. Serial “3566789 ТП” (Type II indicator). This series was key in NEP-era stabilization, redeemable in gold terms to combat hyperinflation. Circulated widely in the 1920s before 1924 reform; collectible for historical significance, early Lenin portrait (rare on currency at this time), and transition from Tsarist to Soviet design. Common in circulated grades due to high issuance and survival rates.
