Description
Issued 1917 (authorized April 1917, circulated into late 1917/early 1918) by the Russian Provisional Government (Kerensky era) via State Bank; one of the highest denominations added amid WWI shortages and revolutionary transition (pre-Bolshevik). Printed on paper. Large size approx. 215 × 132 mm (or similar large format ~8.5 × 5.25 inches). Main colors: dark brown on green underprint (front), blue on light brown/multicolor (back).
- Obverse: Swastika motif in underprint (common ancient symbol at the time, not Nazi-related), ornate borders, denomination “ТЫСЯЧА РУБЛЕЙ” (1000 Rubles), Cyrillic legends, signatures (5 varieties, often Shipov top).
- Reverse: Central view of the Tauride Palace (seat of the State Duma in Petrograd), large “1000” in frames, promise text in Cyrillic.
- Features: Running serial numbers; watermark variants possible; no security thread. Demonetized/withdrawn post-1917 Revolution (transition to Soviet rubles); not legal tender – iconic large collectible from the chaotic 1917 February Revolution period, often called “Kerensky” notes.
